The short version: ARENA's Launchpad Startup Funding Round offers early-stage Australian clean energy startups a $500,000 grant, with up to a further $500,000 for projects with high capital costs. It is aimed mainly at pre-seed to seed-stage companies with technology at TRL 3 or above. Applications close at 4pm AEDT on 28 October 2026, eight days from today.
If you're building renewable energy, electrification or energy efficiency technology, this round has features founders will appreciate: no matched funding requirement, and an application built around a pitch deck and a short video. The catch is time. Here's what the round offers, who can apply and how to decide, honestly, whether you can put in a good application before it closes.

What's new
ARENA announced Launchpad on 16 September 2026 as a $30 million program with two streams: $15 million for startups and $15 million for ecosystem partners such as accelerators. ARENA CEO Darren Miller said startups had asked for "a simpler and faster pathway to smaller amounts of funding" to help them reach their next technical or commercial milestone.
ARENA says the startup round is expected to support between 15 and 30 companies. Grants are expected to fund activities over about 12 months. If you run or work with an accelerator or incubator, the other stream is covered in our article on the Launchpad ecosystem partner round.
Who can apply
According to the Startup Funding Round Announcement, your business must:
- hold a valid ABN
- be an Australian incorporated entity (an Australian subsidiary of an international company can qualify if it shows a commitment to operating and commercialising in Australia)
- be a for-profit entity
- own or develop the technology and have freedom to operate with regard to the IP
- not be a university, publicly funded research organisation or government entity, though university spin-outs and research commercialisation companies are eligible
Your activities must primarily take place in Australia or advance an Australian-based business, relate to technology that has already reached at least TRL 3 (proof of concept), and align with ARENA's functions and Investment Plan.
There's also a screening step. ARENA will check that applicants are genuine early-stage companies, and says well-established companies, such as those with established workforces or that have raised meaningful capital, may be excluded.
What it pays for
The grant supports activities that materially advance your technology or commercial readiness. The Top Up Grant is mainly for deep tech or capital-intensive work. ARENA gives examples like buying or leasing equipment, specialised talent or building a capital-intensive prototype. You'll need to show other options have been tried and that progress depends on it. ARENA says top-ups justified only by extending runway, advertising, admin, delaying fundraising or repaying debt won't be considered high merit.
Ineligible activities include idea-stage concepts below TRL 3, research without a clear commercialisation pathway, business-as-usual overheads, preparing funding applications, and activities completed before the funding agreement is signed. The ARENA FAQ also says the budget should cover new spending from the funding agreement onwards, not money you've already spent. For a refresher, read what are eligible costs in a grant?
GrantAlly reads the program guidelines you upload, checks each published rule, like the TRL 3 threshold and the early-stage test, against your project, and recommends whether to apply. Anything it can't settle stays open for you to confirm. See how the eligibility check works.
Key dates and how to apply
You apply through ARENA's ARENANet portal. The application includes:
- an application form with short written answers
- a pitch deck of no more than 10 slides
- a video of no more than two minutes
- a Conflict of Interest declaration form
- optional supporting evidence, kept to what's essential
Applications are assessed on four weighted criteria: Market and Technology (30%), Team Capability and Capacity (30%), Activities and Business Plan (20%) and Financials (20%). Shortlisted applicants are invited to a short virtual pitch, expected in mid-November. ARENA says it aims to send pitch invitations within two weeks of the closing date.
What to do now
Eight days is tight, but whether it's realistic depends on what you already have. If you have a current pitch deck, evidence of TRL 3 and a clear 12-month plan, a strong application is achievable. If you're starting from nothing, be honest with yourself about whether a rushed application is worth it. ARENA won't help develop applications for this round, and its FAQ says resubmission isn't available.
- Today: read the Program Guidelines and the Startup Funding Round Announcement, and confirm you meet every eligibility rule.
- Set up your ARENANet access early, so login problems don't cost you the last day.
- Adapt your existing pitch deck to ARENA's 10-slide list, including budget, risks and a commercialisation roadmap.
- Download the Project Budget and Sources and Uses Template and build a budget for new, eligible spending only.
- Record the two-minute video once the deck is settled. It doesn't need to be polished, it needs to be clear.
- Decide whether you have a genuine case for a Top Up Grant, or apply for the Baseline Grant only.
- Aim to submit a day or two before 4pm AEDT on 28 October 2026.
Questions go to Launchpad@arena.gov.au, but ARENA says it can't give feedback on the eligibility or merit of individual concepts before you submit.
Things to watch
- It's competitive. Applications are ranked against others in the same Strategic Priority, and ARENA may also take a portfolio approach, so a high-ranked application isn't guaranteed funding.
- Partial offers are possible. ARENA may offer the Baseline Grant only, scale back a top-up, or offer nothing.
- The agreement isn't negotiable. Successful startups must accept the published funding agreement without changes and have 14 days to sign, unless ARENA extends that.
- No second round is confirmed. ARENA says it may consider further startup rounds but hasn't announced any.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need matched funding for the ARENA Launchpad startup grant?
No. There is no matched funding requirement for the Baseline Grant. ARENA says cash contributions may be considered higher merit, and only funds you have secured or can access should be counted.
Can a university spin-out apply?
Yes, if it meets all the eligibility criteria. Universities, publicly funded research organisations and government entities can't apply themselves, but spin-outs and research commercialisation companies can.
What if I miss the 28 October 2026 deadline?
ARENA may not accept late applications. It hasn't announced another startup round, though its FAQ says it may consider further rounds and would announce them publicly on the Launchpad webpage.
